Make sure you're on the right layer, and that you're checking the "colorize" box in your Hue/Saturation options. C:

I'm experimenting with techniques in this tutorial right, but can't seem to figure out what the next step does.

I've just made a transparent layer, make a layer under it and filled it in with light grey, but I'm not sure what effect this makes? Your examples here don't have any colour, so I'm a bit confuzzled. o_O

Using a gray background is just a way to evaluate how the colors look and makes it easier to find any spots you might have missed. Some people like to use it, others don't. Personal preference really. C:
